The work I have submitted is of my current work I am undergoing on my Art Foundation course at Winstanley College. I feel this work best represents me as an artist and how I choose to express myself. I relish the idea of using Colour, Pattern and Texture and they are the main elements that inspire my work and the reason I have chosen a career in Textiles. I am interested in experimenting with fabrics with changing qualities by embossing, burning and layering. Shown below are drawings from my group installation unit. We were inspired by Castle field arches and bridges therefore we recreated the shapes and structures in our installation by using recycled materials. I also did a textile piece where I stitched the arch shapes using free stitch. Drawings and samples of my print unit can be seen with inspirations from the world museum in Liverpool. I then designed an African motif for screen printing as my final outcome. Shown below is also an image of life drawing. I found this challenging at first to get the accurate scales and proportions but I was happy with my final outcomes. There are also images of my body sculpture unit where I was inspired by decorative photo frames where I designed and made a recycled sculpture that could be worn on the body. In my personal work I decided to look at the Art Nouveau movement where it was popular for design to be based on exotic natural phenomena. I chose to draw peacocks and orchids as this best suited the description, which then enabled me to design prints for interior furnishings. Images can also be seen of my unit water where I was particularly interested in the movement and shape the ripples made. I completed two A0 canvases and several textile pieces. I feel Textiles in Practice will help me explore, develop and express my ideas as I grow as a designer with the combination of learning embroidery, print, knit and weave.
